I remember in HS, vocabulary was part of the curriculum because of the SATs. For honors and AP English classes--the kids who all had at least one reading book stashed in our bags at all times--it was generally a waste of about fifteen minutes of class time per week. ;-)

When I was in junior high school, I had a plastic note card box (definitely pre-internet). I remember being home from school because I was sick. I was reading some Jules Verne novel and every time I came across a word I didn't know, I'd look it up in my trusty dictionary and make a note card with its pronunciation and meaning. I was a weird kid.
